Consultation patient

Consultation

For your first visit to our practice, we allow plenty of time to conduct a thorough examination of your mouth, discuss your dental history and give you the opportunity to voice any concerns that you may have. We firmly believe that your appointment is for and about you and that you deserve time, patience, and our undivided attention.

Your initial examination will include:

• taking a medical and dental history

• a full examination of your mouth including dental x-rays, as necessary

• oral cancer screening

• assessing your oral health routine

• discussing relevant preventative measures

• providing your treatment plan

We advise oral cancer screening on a yearly basis as standard. However, if you have any sores, lumps or lingering ulcers in your mouth, no matter the size, it is very important that you book an appointment for a screening.

Early detection is paramount in ensuring the best chance of recovery from oral cancers.

dental Treatments

Treatments

Dental implant, full and partial denture, tooth extraction and root canal.

Dental implants are replacement roots of your teeth. They cannot be seen and once fitted we can either insert a detachable replacement tooth or a permanent, fixed tooth.

These are bespoke to blend and fit with your teeth and are particularly beneficial to those who use dentures which can be uncomfortable and impair speech.

Root Canal

Root canal treatments fall under endodontics which is treating the inside of the tooth with the aim of saving it. This involves local anesthesia to ensure you feel no pain and the removal of infection, decay, and bacteria from within the tooth.

To protect and reinforce the inside of your tooth we then fill the tooth and roots. Should this work be visible we will follow your preferences as to whether you would like a crown fitted or veneers or bondings. We are also able to perform root canals to save teeth damaged by injury.

Tooth Extraction

Most of us will need extraction at some point in our lives, be that as a result of overcrowding of teeth, decay, damage, impaction or disease.

Our aim is to make this experience as pain free and comfortable as possible. We are able to provide both local and general anaesthesia.

With a local anaesthetic the area surrounding the troublesome tooth is numbed. You will be awake throughout the procedure but should not feel pain.

With a general anaesthetic you will be unconscious throughout the procedure. Whilst this no doubt sounds preferable, general anaesthesia does require recovery time from treatment and carries additional risks that we will go through with you at your appointment.

Following any extraction you should avoid smoking and strenuous exercise for around four days and eat a soft diet until the discomfort subsides.

Full and Partial Denture

At Highfield Avenue, we craft your dentures on a bespoke basis to allow for maximum comfort.  However, dentures can still become uncomfortable and bothersome.

Dentures require care and maintenance just like teeth and this includes brushing and cleaning.

We have numerous creative solutions to offer you to reduce discomfort and properly care for your dentures so that you can eat, speak and smile with confidence.

As our dentures are so highly bespoke, they vary as greatly as mouths so we suggest booking an appointment with us to receive tailored support.

Dental Cosmetic treatment

Cosmetic

White Fillings, Crowns, Bridges, Veneers, Bonding, Gum Treatment and Whitening.

White Fillings, Crowns and Bridges

White Fillings

At Highfield Avenue Dental, we understand that many people are uncomfortable with visible, silver amalgam fillings.

Historically, silver fillings were used as they were considerably more durable than white fillings. Nowadays, we use the most up to date materials in dentistry meaning our white fillings are not only natural looking but durable and long lasting.

We understand just how linked your smile is to your confidence and want our patients to smile broadly and proudly.

Crowns

Crowns are crafted on a bespoke basis in order to blend with your teeth.

We use Crowns where a tooth has a significantly different colour to the rest of your teeth, or where a tooth has become weakened or damaged. This acts as armour for your tooth. It covers all visible parts of the tooth up to the gum line to shield and protect it from further damage.

Crowns are incredibly durable and versatile as they come in a range of metals, reinforced porcelain, and standalone porcelain.

Bridges

Bridges are crafted bespoke to replace any missing teeth and gaps in your smile. Bridges attach to the teeth adjacent to the gaps and are crafted to blend in to your smile.

Veneers and Bonding

Our patients consider cosmetic and aesthetic dentistry for a number of reasons from single tooth work to combat discoloration and gaps to whole-mouth makeover for professional winning smiles.

We would be happy to assist you in your decision between veneers and bondings but we have put together a brief guide that will assist you prior to consultation.

Veneers are bespoke to each tooth and as such are painless to fit and color of your choosing. After reducing the size of the tooth, to avoid the sensation of you having something strange and alien in your mouth, we place a very fine layer of porcelain over your tooth or teeth.

This provides a snug, accurate fit and a lifetime of stain-free teeth when cared for (more cautious estimates are 10 to 25 years).

Dental bonding is a similar procedure whereby we prepare the surface of the tooth but then we apply a resin. Bonding can last from three to ten years when cared for. Although not a permanent solution, bonding is excellent for addressing minor imperfections in your teeth such as chips and gaps.

Teeth Whitening

Irrespective of how well we care for our teeth, they will stain over time.

At Highfield Avenue we understand the effect this can have on your confidence and even your willingness to smile.

Beauty salons and the like are only legally allowed to carry out teeth whitening procedures under the supervision of a dentist at all times and we would strongly advise against salon or home treatment.

A tooth whitening consultation with us is the best way to decide which treatment suits your needs but we have options whereby we craft a mouth guard to fit you comfortably and whiten over a period of weeks, and laser options that can be completed in one hour.

If you have not had a recent dental hygiene appointment we would urge you to come in for one as regular thorough and professional cleaning can prevent the need for more extensive whitening treatments in some cases.

Gum Treatments

At Highfield Avenue, we understand that a confident smile isn’t all about teeth.

For those with extensive or uneven gum growth and distribution, we are pleased to be able to offer cosmetic solutions known as gum contouring or cosmetic gum lifting.

Performed using a local anesthetic to alleviate any pain we are able to trim your gums using state-of-the-art equipment.

Dental Hygiene

Hygiene

Scale and polish, periodontal chip and Treatment, fluoride application.

At Highfield Avenue Dental, we recommend hygiene visits at least twice a year.

This is an invaluable opportunity to not only maintain and sustain your oral health but to spot early any concerning changes such as oral cancers.

Each hygiene appointment involves a thorough inspection of your teeth and mouth and scaling and polishing of your teeth.

Often, frequent hygiene appointments can remove the need to undergo teeth whitening treatments but are an excellent opportunity to discuss your options if this is something you wish to pursue.

Dental X-ray

Small x-rays, 3D scan, ortopanthomography.

At Highfield Avenue Dental, we perform dental X-rays to assist in the diagnosis of dental, arcade, and gum issues.

X-rays also aid in the planning of extractions, implants, and other treatments. Additionally, they are used to monitor the development of orthodontic treatment and of the dental arch in children and adolescents.

The 3D scanner is an advanced imaging tool for diagnosing dental issues and planning treatments. It provides three-dimensional images of the mouth and facial structures.

Orthopantomography is a panoramic X-ray that provides a detailed and comprehensive view of the entire oral and maxillofacial region. It is used in dental diagnostics, treatment planning and monitoring various dental and facial conditions.

dental aligners

Aligners

Braces and clear braces, mouth guard and retainers.

Braces and clear braces

Braces improve much more than the improved aesthetics of realignment of crooked, protruding or crowded teeth and gaps. Straightened teeth allow for easier care of both your teeth and gums and improve your bite, allowing you to eat more comfortably.

We offer both metal braces and clear, ceramic braces which are less visible but will need to be worn for longer.

We are happy to discuss with you which brace best meets your needs but you should expect treatment to take between one year and two and a half years and plan to attend appointments on an approximately six weekly basis during this time.

For our younger patients we recommend the fitting of braces at the most optimal (in terms of jaw and tooth development) age of twelve or thirteen. However, this is not a hard and fast rule and braces can be fitted earlier or later.

Mouth guard and retainers

At Highfield Avenue Dental, we are proud to offer highly bespoke mouthguards and retainers offering maximum comfort and protection.

Retainers are designed to retain the new shape and setting of your teeth following previous dental work, maximizing the effectiveness of your treatment.

We create mouthguards for numerous reasons but most commonly to protect your teeth and jaw following injury, to protect your teeth whilst playing contact sports, and to realign your jaw to ease conditions such as sleep apnoea and nocturnal tooth grinding.

This can also be a cost-effective solution for over and underbites.

facial aesthetics

Aesthetics

Anti wrinkle injections and dermal fillers. We provide facial aesthetic services as many of our patients wish to enhance their new and improved smiles and to undergo enhancement with someone they know and trust.

Anti Wrinkle injections last for approximately three to four months and are better suited to addressing fine lines and wrinkles that form on muscle movement.

As a guide, if you were to look in the mirror and frown or smile; it is these forming lines that would most benefit from the treatment. They can take up to two weeks to benefit from the full effect.

Dermal fillers are better suited to tackle deeper lines that are visible when your face is in a neutral position and last anywhere from three months to a year. Dermal fillers can also be used to contour your face and enhance your lips.
